The largest quake was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey as magnitude 6.9. In the aftermath, panicked people, plenty of bleeding from their wounds, flooded the streets of a Qinghai province township where most of the homes had been flattened. Students were reportedly buried inside several damaged schools.
BEIJING – A series of strong earthquakes struck a mountainous Tibetan area of western China on Wednesday, killing at least 400 people and injuring over 10,000 as houses made of mud and wood collapsed, officials said. Plenty of more people were trapped and the toll was expected to rise.
Paramilitary police used shovels to dig through the rubble in the town, footage on state tv showed. Officials said excavators were not obtainable & with most of the roads leading to the nearest airport damaged, equipment & rescuers would have a hard time reaching the area. Hospitals were overwhelmed, lots of lacking even the most basic supplies, & doctors were in short supply.
Downed phone lines, strong winds & frequent aftershocks also delayed rescue efforts, said Wu Yong, commander of the local army garrison, who said the death toll "may rise further as lots of houses collapsed."
With lots of people forced outside, the provincial government said it was rushing 5,000 tents & 100,000 coats & blankets to the mountainous region, at around 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) -high & where night time temperatures plunge below freezing.
Workers were racing to release water from a reservoir in the disaster area where a crack had formed after the shake to prevent a floodwater, according to the China Earthquake Administration.
The Wednesday shake, which struck at 7:49 a.m. local time (2349 GMT, 7:49 p.m. EDT), was centered on Yushu county, in the southern part of Qinghai, near Tibet, with a population of about 100,000, mostly herders & farmers.
The USGS recorded three temblors in less than five hours, all but four registering 5.0 or higher. The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the largest quake's magnitude at 7.1. Qinghai averages over four earthquakes a year of at least magnitude 5.0, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. They normally do not cause much destroy in the sparsely populated province.
Residents fled as the ground shook, toppling houses made of mud & wood, as well as temples, gas stations, electric poles & the top of a Buddhist pagoda in a park, witnesses & state media said. The shake also triggered landslides, Xinhua said.
"Nearly all the houses made of mud & wood collapsed. There was so much dust in the air, they could not see anything," said Ren Yu, general manager of Yushu Hotel in Jiegu, the county's main town. "There was a lot of panic. People were crying on the streets. A number of our staff, who were reunited with their parents, were also in tears."
Rumors Which confirmed the iPhone is coming to Verizon have been buzzing around the Web over the last day or so. So what should Verizon iPhone users expect when the tool finally comes to the nation's largest wireless network?
First, rumors of the Verizon iPhone are that. There has been no confirmation from Apple or Verizon about the launch of this tool. That said, there was seldom a query that AT&T's exclusivity deal with Apple would finish five day. The gigantic query has basically been when. & thinking about that Verizon is the largest wireless operator in the U.S., it is reasonable to guess that they'd be first in line when AT&T's exclusivity with Apple ends.
On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was readying a CDMA version of the iPhone. The news story cited sources & speculated that this version of the phone could be sold by U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless.
The current generations of iPhones are made for GSM networks. AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone, along with the vast majority of operators throughout the world, use GSM for their network technology. A handful of wireless carriers, including Verizon & Sprint Nextel in the U.S., along with some operators in China & South Korea, use CDMA.
Since the iPhone first launched in 2007, AT&T has had the exclusive contract to offer it in the U.S. Details of the agreement have seldom been made public. But AT&T has hinted in recent months that it is preparing for a day when it won't be the only U.S. cell phone carrier offering the iconic tool. Since Verizon Wireless is the largest mobile operator in the U.S., experts have long anticipated a phone that would be compatible with its network.
Not much is known about the new CDMA iPhone or when exactly it will come to market. But here is a glimpse of what potential Verizon iPhone customers might expect, based on rumors gathered from around the Web as well as information known about Verizon's network & strategy.
When will it be available?
Before Verizon fans get their knickers twisted in a knot, they might need to take a breath. Make that a long, deep breath.
A follow-up Journal story published Tuesday quoted analysts who said the new phone might first be distributed internationally. Maynard Um & Arun Sharma, analysts at UBS, believe a CDMA version of the phone could be launched by China Telecom & KDDI later this year. But they don't believe a Verizon version of the iPhone will come to market in 2010.
It could be at least two months to a year before a Verizon version of the iPhone is available. The original Journal news story reported that production of a CDMA version of the iPhone would not start until September. This could mean devices on store shelves in September, or it could take longer before they are available for retail. Also, recall that Verizon is not the only CDMA carrier in the world.
Other analysts agree.
"We would not count on a Verizon iPhone for the holidays," Bill Shope, an analyst at Credit Suisse wrote in a research note cited by the Journal. He said the tool is likely still in the planning stages.
If the Verizon version of the iPhone is released in 2011, there is a lovely chance that it will have LTE embedded. LTE or Long Term Evolution is the technology Verizon is using to build its 4G wireless network. The network will be available in 25 to 30 markets by the finish of 2010. & more markets will be available in 2011. Verizon has said that an LTE phone would be available in 2011. The technology is still new, so it is unlikely a handset could come to market in 2010 with LTE embedded.
Will the new iPhone for Verizon work on Verizon's soon-to-be-launched 4G network?
Are there any tool details?
Specific details or pics of the rumored new iPhone have not begun circulating. So it is difficult to say for positive what potential customers should expect. In addition to the CDMA version of the phone, the Journal also said that Apple will announce a new version of the iPhone for GSM networks this summer. Engadget pegs the date of the fourth-generation iPhone announcement for June 22.
Engadget also reports that the fourth-generation GSM iPhone will have an enhanced screen that will be made for HD video with double the resolution compared to the current iPhone. This makes sense given the high resolution screens on the Droid, Nexus Five, & Evo 4G.
It is also likely that the new version will have faster processors as well as a front-facing camera, according to Daring Fireball's John Gruber.
"The new iPhone will at a maximum have the same features offered on a GSM version of the iPhone," said David Wertheimer, CEO & executive director of the Entertainment Technology Center at USC, a nonprofit consortium funded by Hollywood studios as well as a variety technology companies. "Customers will expect it to be in parity with what is offered by AT&T & other GSM carriers."
Apple has released a new iPhone every year since 2007. Some experts speculate that plenty of if not all of the upgrades speculated for the next-generation GSM version will also be in the CDMA version of the phone.
That said, the Journal story said the upgraded GSM iPhone is being made by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry, which produced Apple's previous iPhones. & the CDMA iPhone model is being made by Pegatron Technology. This means the different versions of the phone may look & feel different.
Will the new iPhone perform better on the Verizon network?
The problems & frustrations that plenty of iPhone users have experienced over the years--especially those in cities such as New York & San Francisco--have been well documented. since the phone was launched, unhappy iPhone subscribers, mostly in densely populated urban areas, have complained about slow Net access & dropped calls.
AT&T has acknowledged these problems, stating that it's seen information traffic on its network grow 5,000 percent over the past few years. Most of this growth is attributable to the iPhone. To fix these problems, AT&T has been upgrading its network with faster radio technology & more backhaul capacity. Some consumers say they have already noticed a difference in the quality of AT&T's network.
The gigantic query is whether Verizon customers will experience the same problems. Given that other carriers offering the iPhone in other countries, such as the U.K., have also had issues, there is a chance that Verizon's network might also be overwhelmed.
Verizon says its network is prepared to handle a floodwater of traffic from the iPhone or any other data-hungry smartphone. Like its competitors it's been adding capacity to its backhaul network, which transmits traffic from the cell tower to the wired network.
But in all fairness, actual network speeds are dependent on plenty of factors. So it will be interesting to see whether consumers notice a difference in performance between AT&T & Verizon. My guess is that, depending on where you are using your iPhone, five network provider might outperform the other. If you live & work where Verizon has better coverage, you could see better performance there. But if you are in a strong AT&T area, it might offer a better experience.
In general, Verizon has a wider 3G footprint. (That is what Verizon's commercials with the blue & red maps are all about.) But AT&T does in theory have a faster 3G network than Verizon. AT&T has upgraded its network to a new version of 3G technology called HSPA 7.2, which is faster than what is offered by Verizon's 3G technology called EV-DO.
Is there anything the Verizon iPhone might not be able to do that the AT&T iPhone can do?
The bottom line is there is no guarantee that Verizon's network will perform any better than AT&T's network.
Yes. The CDMA version of the iPhone will most likely not permit users to talk on the phone using a headset or a speaker, while surfing the Web simultaneously. This is not a phone issue, but a limitation in network technology. GSM allows voice connections & information connections to occur on a tool simultaneously. CDMA technology does not. However, with Wi-Fi it is possible to surf the Web & talk on a CDMA phone, because the Wi-Fi uses a separate radio technology. This may not be a gigantic deal for everyone, but it is something that Luke Wilson has been pointing out in AT&T's commercials.

The president gets a boost with his base and may win over some independents by tying his political opponents to 2 of the nation's most polarizing figures.

Barack Obama’s tongue-lashing of conservative talk-show titans Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck this week could prove a winner for both sides.

In an interview that aired on CBS’s "Early Show" Friday, Obama said the rhetoric employed by the chief chatterers of the conservative movement is “troublesome” — and they cast Limbaugh and Beck as demagogues who money in on the fears of Americans struggling through a rough economy.

But the conservative talkers get presidential confirmation that they are at the center of the political debate — together with a collection of sound bytes that will fuel their shows for days to come.

Limbaugh fired back in an email to POLITICO, arguing that his ratings are fine in nice time and bad — and accusing Obama of "purposely" governing "against the will of the people."

It is not the first time a president has gone after conservative talk radio; in the days after the Oklahoma City bombing, President Bill Clinton said that "promoters of paranoia" on the airwaves "must know that their bitter words can have consequences."

And it is not Obama's first round in the ring, either.

The president's shots at Limbaugh and Beck are the latest sequel in what is becoming a franchise of attacks on conservative media outlets and personalities deemed hostile – and five in which a nice portion of the box office returns are definite to accrue to the president’s hand-picked villains.

A small over a year ago, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel called Limbaugh “the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party." Then, in October, POLITICO reported on a concerted White House strategy to undermine institutions that are influential in the Republican coalition, including Limbaugh, Fox News and the Chamber of Commerce, touching off a backlash from moderate Democratic lawmakers who worried about alienating conservatives who pulled the lever for Democrats in 2006 and 2008.

The White House seemed to move on; the president made nice with the Chamber and sat down recently for an interview with Fox's Bret Baier.

"Well, I think that when you listen to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, it is apparent, and it is troublesome, but keep in mind that there's been periods in American history where this kind of vitriol comes out," Obama said. "It happens often when you have got an economy that is making people more anxious and people are feeling like there is a lot of change that needs to take place. But that is not the vast majority of Americans. I think the vast majority of Americans know that we are trying hard, that I need what is best for the country."

But when CBS's Harry Smith asked Obama this week about accusations from critics that they is everything from a socialist to a Nazi — and about the “level of enmity that crosses the airwaves” on talk radio — Obama picked up where he'd left off with Limbaugh and Beck.
The process of Marketing products & websites services through the Web is unquestionably not as hard & more rewarding compared to traditional marketing methods. With the millions of people worldwide getting online each day, there’s a huge possibility for a merchant to sell his products & generate huge income.

However, merchandisers are not the only ones who can benefit from online marketing. A booming industry today, provides great opportunity as well to individuals as affiliate marketers. In affiliate marketing, an affiliate marketer doesn’t need to have his own products & services to promote and sell. All they need to do is refering people to the merchant’s business site for them to buy the products & thereby, earn a commission.

But before you set out on your quest to pick the best & most financially rewarding choice for you, first think about how you are going to find a lovely affiliate program with the thousands of affiliate marketing opportunities abounding in the Web today, & believe me, there's thousands but do not be dismayed. Try to look in to the following tips & suggestions on how to best select the affiliate program that’s right for you.

The key to an affiliate marketer’s success is to choose a lovely affiliate program & to employ excellent marketing techniques in promoting or selling the products to consumers. Why lovely & not the best affiliate program? There is no “best affiliate marketing program,” as one program might make one affiliate marketer a millionaire & the other a frustrated marketer. In other words, it can be a success to one & a failure to another. But there certainly is a lovely affiliate marketing program to start with. How to pick the right one for your own home based business is up to you & your interests.

The Web Affiliate marketing program networks are lovely places to look for choices for your home business. The merchants promote their affiliate programs to interested affiliates who sign up in the network for free. Third party affiliate program networks are helpful since they provide you with access to a giant number of advertisers (merchandisers) simultaneously. You can easily track & compare their sales records, performances, benefits, products & services. Look for opportunities that merge one or more affiliate programs in to one. This won't only increase your chances to make a sale but will appeal to a wider audience & finally, through consistent & persistent promotion & marketing, will earn you a greater profit. A lovely example of this idea in action is www.peoplesearchdotcom.ws/make-money-online. This opportunity has 9+ affiliate programs all combined in to one home based business opportunity.

Here is some information that you need in order to make the right choice for your home based business. It is helpful when you have already focused your search to a specific interest, which may be the theme of your web-site (if you already have one). Let me make a side note here: It is very cheap to get your own web-site &, when you start marketing your newfound affiliate program it is very advantageous to have your own web-site link in lieu of using the provided affiliate link. Using affiliate links is ok but you risk someone seeing your ad & taking your link, removing your affiliate ID from the link then visiting the main site (which is usually the first part of the affiliate link) which removes your chance for a sale. There's also affiliates out there who will replace your affiliate id in your link to theirs thereby stealing your commission. So, having your own web-site can eliminate or at least reduce the chances of these things happening. Now back to the main point; focusing on a specific interest will let you be able to direct yourself towards a program that matches your needs, wants & resources. It would be not as hard for you to eliminate options that are not suited to your own criteria for a lovely affiliate marketing program. You can join affiliate forums such as; http://www.ad-alyzer.com/727/Forum_Example0310 & learn some tips & get suggestions from experienced affiliate marketers.

So now you have choices, the next query is which among those options is the right one to start your own home business. Here are some things to think about in deciding which to take & which to reject. First is the quality of the products & services. As an affiliate marketer your aim is not only to make visitors of your site click the link to the business site; but more importantly, to promote the product so they would buy it. If the customers are not convinced on going to the business site, then you do not earn. Make sure the products you are endorsing are worthwhile or in the business context, saleable. Ask yourself: if I were the customer, would I buy it? Would I recommend it to my relatives or lovely mate? If you can’t convince yourself or your relatives & friends to buy it, take a look at your next option.

Another is the affiliate program or the merchandiser’s history. Look in to their previous & present sales information, their proven & tested affiliate marketing systems & their partners’ experiences with them. Although, success of the program depends on you, this one is still very important. The sales records don’t only show how lovely the affiliates are, but they speak about the products’ reliability, market availability & the company or the merchandisers’ reputation as well. Moreover, look in to & carefully study the company’s compensation plan. Your purpose for joining the program is to earn, so make sure you’ll be paid for all your efforts .

Take down all the advantages & disadvantages of each program you are thinking about so you can clearly see the difference among your options; then later, compare the advantages of the programs with your own checklist. Take time to gather all the info you need to choose the right program. Recall an informed choice is the best choice.

If you do not have much time to promote intensively the affiliate products by generating banners, graphics & articles, choose affiliate programs that help you generate these for your web-site, most affiliate programs have banner, text ad, email sales letters etc, that you can use to promote the program. It would be great if the company provides training on how to effectively market products online. Recall that affiliate marketing is a partnership, so make sure your partner can support you as you help him promote his products & services.
OTTAWA (AP) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper told U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton that Canada's military mission in Afghanistan will end in 2011.
Clinton went on Canadian television on Monday and said the U.S. would like Canadian troops to remain in Afghanistan past 2011 and suggested they could switch from a combat to a training role.
But Dimitri Soudas, a spokesman for Harper, says Harper told Clinton on Tuesday that after 2011 Canada will be involved in a civilian mission focused largely on aid and reconstruction.
Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon also ruled out any form of a military mission post-2011 at a news conference late Monday night following Clinton's remarks.
